FFA Centre of Excellence midfielder Louis D’Arrigo has continued his strong start to the season, scoring a last minute winner to give his side a 1-0 victory over Belconnen United at McKellar Park on Saturday night.
His first goal of the season saw the FFA Centre of Excellence reinforce their standing as a top contender in this year’s PS4 National Premier League.
The winner came after 93 minutes of frustration for D’Arrigo and his teammates.
While the FFA Centre of Excellence had the majority of possession and chances to score, it seemed the game was certain to end in a goalless draw.
But up after some scrappy play in Belconnen’s six-yard-area, the ball fell to D’Arrigo who steadily knocked it home before wheeling off to the corner flag to celebrate.
Despite coming up against a defensive minded Belconnen United side, D’Arrigo was certain his side would grab a winner.
“I felt the goal was coming,” D’Arrigo said.
“I was telling my teammates and myself it was.
“Eventually it came and I was lucky enough to score it.
“It was hard to break through their defense for most of the game. Credit to the boys for keeping focus and fighting to the end.”
The result sees the FFA Centre of Excellence consolidate their place in the top four.
Goal-scorer D’Arrigo has impressed this season with his precise passing and poise with the ball at his feet.
The South-Australian product joined the FFA Centre of Excellence in 2016 and stressed the importance of head-coach Tony Vidmar and his staff on his development.
“As a player I think I’m developing each week,” D’Arrigo said.
“If I weren’t [at the FFA Centre of Excellence], I’m not sure where I would be as a player.”
